Review + Giveaway: Did someone say GIVEAWAY! Hunting Daylight (Acquainted With the Night #2) - A unique take on vampires
Review
I wasn’t totally sure what to expect with Hunting Daylight, but the surprise was pleasant enough. I held off initially because the cover quotes a fellow author stating it has “vampires and nonstop sex.” That’s all well and good, but I wasn’t up for a PNR at the time. However, when I finally got to it I found a that I stumbled upon a pretty smart story. Vampires, while powerful in their own right, are a little more realistic. They get diseases, they age, and they have offspring which are capable of powers of their own. Even more interesting, vampires aren’t always compatible with hybrids. I won’t explain further so as not to spoil it, but the workaround are intriguing.
The story is told through multiple POVs which is nice, though not necessary since most of it is in third person. I like when an author provides a POV of the villain which we see here. It’s always more exciting to get into their whacked out heads and experiencing how they rationalize what they do.
Occasionally the writing felt a little drawn out and flat, but the end was well done. Some plot lines are left unresolved, but I’m hesitant to consider it a cliffhanger. This is the second book in what I imagine will be an ongoing series. I didn’t read the first one but I didn’t feel lost here, so I would say that reading the first one is not a requirement to enjoy and understand the story. There’s some science involved, but it’s not at a level that would go over the average reader’s head. It’s actually pretty interesting.
All in all, I recommend the series. I think the cover trying to market it as a sexy paranormal romance does the book a disservice on both ends. Readers looking for a different kind of vampire tale more plot oriented may overlook this book, and someone that nabs it hoping for paranormal romance may find themselves disappointed. Honestly, out of 530 pages that might me 30 pages dedicated to sex, but it’s sprinkled throughout the novel. That does not sound like “nonstop sex” to me, but you be the judge.
